Michigan Medical Loss Ratio determination letter
12/20/2011 –
Decision by HHS to deny Michigan’s waiver to phase in the medical loss ratio. Health insurance companies must spend at least 80 percent of premium revenues on patient care or rebate policyholders the difference, under a federal ruling today that benefits Michigan consumers and patients. The ruling denies a Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation (OFIR) waiver application that would have diverted more than $53 million in projected consumer rebates back to commercial insurance carriers in Michigan.
State Could Save $1 Billion by Expanding Medicaid
10/17/2012 – Affordability
The Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation analyzes the impact of a Medicaid Expansion in Michigan as part of the Affordable Care Act implementation. “Our analysis of the impacts on the state of Michigan shows a 10-year savings to the state under all scenarios. In our middle scenario, the state would save almost $1 billion net of the cost of the Medicaid expansion over 10 years. In that scenario, the Medicaid expansion would bring an additional 620,000 people—most of whom are uninsured today—into the state’s Medicaid program, at an average annual savings of $176 per enrollee, with no net costs to the state until the year 2020.” http://www.chrt.org/publications/price-of-care/aca-medicaid-expansion-michigan-impact/
