The following is a study that was compiled by McKinsey & Co. categorized the network size of networks in the 2015 marketplaces but they only looked at the proportion of participating hospitals. This is the first study to look at the physician network – a thankless task that involved “scraping” provider directories off of the web. Even better news – in coming months the authors plan to make this dataset available to researchers and the public.

This data is a first step towards helping states implement meaningful network adequacy standards and actionable consumer-facing summary measures. In turn, that should make the pros and cons of narrow networks more transparent to consumers and advocates.
